Summer, Rain and the Abandoned Lake
In Bangalore, the weather has become so unpredictable this summer. One moment the sun looks like it will make a Joshi Fry or Barbecued Joshi out of me if I venture out, and the next moment the clouds gather and threaten to lash the city. Most of the time it turns out to be all bark and no bite, but the rain gauge, nevertheless, has recorded highest rainfall in 40 years.
When the Sun is shy of showing himself, I sometimes tramp across the vast stretch of barren land in front of my house to the lake (Begur Lake) at the other end which has long been abandoned. I sit on the lakeshore under the grey leaden sky with the caressing wind gently swirling around me. It feels like heaven.
Sounds cool right?, I also have to tell you the heaven-like feeling is only until the clouds starts rumbling. It becomes hell once the lighting starts flashing across the sky and I start running northwards, homebound at 50 miles per hour, while my lungi flies southwards. My wife, once, looking out at the open field caught me running with my lungi fluttering ferociously in the gusty wind and when I reached home, she quipped, “I thought I just saw Superman!!”
Outside my window – leaves washed in the glory of an afternoon Sun
Grey clouds – a view from Decathlon on the Sarjapur Road
Begur Lake – the one I’m talking about. Only a few hundred meters walk from my house. Rain clouds brewing above.
sometimes my daughter joins me (only on the days I chose to wear pants)
I live in this unfashionable locality. Picture taken from the Lake towards the general direction of my house which is hiding behind the front row. On a side note, this area is fast developing and that means this green stretch will soon disappear! Sad, but can’t help it.
P.S: Today, as I post this, let me break the news that somebody, yesterday morning (8th May 2011), found a Buddha statue presumed to be over 700 years old from this lake (in pic 3 and 4). Police suspect the statue might have been stolen and dumped into the lake for safe-keeping (good idea). You may hear more about this in the newspaper.

P.S 2: It’s a shame that this beautiful lake had to endure negligence for years. Now there is good news that the govt has decided to turn this lake into a tourist attraction.
Are u on the Sarjapur Road Joshi? I was on the Bannerghatta road, Mantri elegance for 5 yrs until last year . Miss Blore.
I’m not on the Sarjapur road, but I love that area. I’m living close to Electronic City now, near Begur.
You can say,”Oh,I have a waterfront home in blore..” Nice photo story..
My area is fast developing. Soon the barren land infront of my house will be converted into large appartments, and sadly, one day the lake itself will dissapear. let me put this as a post script note…..
Chennai is worst.. !! 🙂 ur daughter’s kolusu.. cool cool 😀
My daughter likes the sound made by Kolusu. Me too.
A wandering soul here as well .. Loved that free and light post 🙂 I am a blogger as well. Coul i have a review ?? My name got the link of the blog. 🙂
Why not? I will review your blog. Thanks for commenting on this one.
Beautiful pictures! Hmm, Malaysia’s weather is as bad! The last few days the sky behaved as if gonna burst rain soon (with extreme heat), dark sky and nothing nice! At the end, false alarm as no rainfall! We, human on this ground, stayed indoor with full blast air conditioners! Talking about saving the ozone layers! Shame!
Guess life goes on… rain or shine, n treasure in the lake! Cheers!
Thanks Lion Girl. Yes life goes on….
Don’t bother much on the barren land infront of your house..Now you are a part of the Big City .You may know that your appartment locality was also a barren land some years before..
Yes, true
one more thing…the lake looks so clean. Is it like that or just a camera trick?
What trick can I do with my mobile camera? The water looked clean, but the shores weren’t clean and I did not want to cover them in my shots.
ya…That’s the trick….
ha!
All said & done Bangalore still has a lovely climate 🙂
Yes. We dont see the kind of heat waves that are experienced in other cities.
Lovely pictures! Very clear and very… drawing somehow, if you know what I mean. Your city has amazing weather.
Despite all that I have told (about scorching sun), the weather is still better than most cities in India.
You should visit the lake now….its completely dried up and the land has huge cracks……
you will have a gr8 collection of before and after pics if you come here now….BTW, we are planning to have an event to save this lake…let me know if you will be interested to join hands and save this lake….
